Architectural Solutions Towards a 1,000 Channel Ultra- Wideband WDM Network

In this paper architectural considerations for deployment of ultra-wideband (14501650 nm) WDM networks having a massive number of WDM channels (400-1,000), are presented. The fundamental networking building block is an all-optical ring comprised by ultra-wideband WDM Passive Optical Networks (PONs) interconnected via a suitable optical cross-connect. Each PON could aggregate traffic from hundreds of thousands of users. The resulting benefits in terms of node consolidation and enhancements of transported capacity for both residential and business users are analysed for a MAN/WAN network. The critical component for such a network is a single multiplexer/demultiplexer for the entire spectral range. This device is also presented and its performance in terms of coupling efficiency and crosstalk is calculated.
